With 13,681 employees, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) is the second largest local social services agency in the nation.  The Department currently serves over 3.2 million residents and manages a budget of over $3.9 billion to provide benefits and services for families and individuals.
Our services include nutrition assistance in the form of CalFresh benefits, employment services and supportive services via our welfare-to-work programs, financial and homeless assistance for families through the CalWORKs program, In-Home Supportive Services for our disabled and elderly population, Medi-Cal and access to other healthcare plans offered under the Affordable Care Act, and financial aid and homeless assistance for qualifying individuals through the General Relief program.
With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and expanded accessibility to Medi-Cal benefits, DPSS has now assisted over half-a-million individuals apply for health care coverage.
In an on-going effort to improve customer service while embracing technology, DPSS is actively identifying and developing new and innovative ways to deliver services conveniently.  Customers can access DPSS services:

Scam Alert

According to the United States Department of Agriculture-Food and Nutrition Service (USDA-FNS), there are two concurrent scams you should be aware of.  One involves the general public and the other involves SNAP/EBT retailers.  The scams are using the USDA-FNS Hotline Number as a phone number of origin and making unsolicited calls to the general public and to SNAP/EBT retailers.

Additional information regarding these scams can be found at USDA Food and Nutrition Service website and are also included in the CalFresh-SNAP Telephone Scam Fact Sheet.

If you receive illegitimate calls, you may file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission at 1-888-225-5322.  For information on identity theft, please visit the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Information website.

Never provide your personal information or credit card number over the phone to unsolicited callers.

DPSS continues to play a critical role in the health care system through the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  Our employees are continuing to assist individuals and families by determining eligibility for health care coverage.
The ACA of 2010 opened an unprecedented opportunity to access affordable health care coverage for millions of uninsured individuals.
The ACA requires health plans and insurers to provide health insurance access to individuals, regardless of their health status, age or occupation.  It also requires individuals to purchase and maintain insurance coverage for themselves and their families.
Full implementation of ACA began January 1, 2014, and Los Angeles County changed the way it conducted business to help meet the needs of its residents.  Along with determining eligibility for Medi-Cal, DPSS Intake and CSC workers have been hard at work assisting customers with Covered California enrollment.
The open enrollment period for Covered California began November 15, 2014, and continues through February 15, 2015.
The open enrollment period does not apply to Medi-Cal applicants. DPSS staff serves and assist families and individuals who lack affordable health care coverage with Medi-Cal applications year-round.
From November 15, 2014, thru December 15, 2014, customers who contact Covered California at 1-888-300-1506 to apply for Medi-Cal are being directed to DPSS agents for Medi-Cal enrollment.  Hours of operation are:
  • Monday through Friday - 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.;
  • Saturdays - 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; and
  • Certain Sundays - 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
